World Book Day - Thursday 2nd March 2017

The BFG visited Brackenfield School for World Book Week.

The BFG made a very special visit to Brackenfield School in Harrogate this week to celebrate World Book Week. The school chose The BFG as their theme for the week and the children were amazed and really excited to see the BFG himself at their school. He retold his story to the whole school assisted by a range of wonderful props, including very loud whizzpoppers! Even his car had his own personal BFG number plate! The children then did their own work on the BFG and presented this to the school in a BFG assembly.

The pupils also entered the school’s 500 word story competition mirroring the very successful BBC Radio 2 competition. Indeed many of the children also entered their stories to the BBC competition. The winners of each year group were awarded certificates and the overall winners will enjoy a special trip to Waterstones. Children also brought a favourite book to swap, wrapped in brown paper, with a book mark attached explaining why the book was so good.

Head of English, Mrs. Wardell was delighted with how the week went. “ My aim for the week was to enhance the children’s love of reading and writing stories .The special visit from the BFG himself was certainly the icing on the cake. I loved reading the children’s 500 word stories which were then judged by a local author who chose the winning entries and who in turn commented on how impressed she had been with all the entries”.

Headteacher, Pat Sowa was also very pleased with the week. “World Book Week is a wonderful opportunity to give the children extra inspiration to lose themselves in books and let them express their imagination in their own stories. I would like to thank Mrs. Wardell for all of her inspirational work, especially during this week.”
